Dear Steve,
I wrote out several versions of the same cliched note but couldn't bear any of
them. But the more Lu and I tried to think of what to say I realized that
people say all those things not because they're comforting or because we're
suppose to regurgitate the same condolences that we once received, but because
all those words are true. So here it goes: Lu and I are so sorry for your
loss. You and your family are indeed in our thoughts and prayers. And though I
never met your father, I can tell by the man that you are and from your stories
of him, that he was a fine soul.
