Michael Arthur Robinson, 67, a long-time high school teacher in Norman, died Saturday, March 24, 2012 after a long illness.
Mike was born July 16, 1944, in Winfield, KS, to Charles Douglas and Martha Jean Roach Robinson. His family resided in Blackwell for many years before returning to Winfield, where Mike graduated from Winfield High School. He was captain of both the football and basketball teams and played American Legion baseball.
He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social studies from the University of Oklahoma. At OU he was a member of the President’s Leadership Class and Delta Tau Delta social fraternity.
He taught American and Oklahoma history and geography for 37 years, first at Norman High School, where he also directed the intramural program and was the public address announcer for football and basketball, and later at Norman North. He supervised the City of Norman’s summer baseball program and was one of the “chain gang” on the sidelines at OU football games for more than 30 years.
Mike was an avid collector of historical memorabilia, specializing in campaign buttons and items pertaining to early Oklahoma and southern Kansas, an interest he shared with his longtime friend and colleague, Pat Lennington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, David Burr. His survivors include his sister, Carol Burr of Norman; a niece, Kathleen Burr of Addison, TX; nephews Michael Burr and wife Jan and children Haley, Riley and Charlie of Hinsdale, IL; and Thad Burr of Oklahoma City.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Rivermont Independent Living Community, The Gardens at Rivermont, Cedar Creek Living Center and Heartland Hospice for their care and concern during Mike’s illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman.
