A Space Pioneer Leaves this World at 87
Bobby Charles (Bob) Danner was born February 10, 1930 in Jonesville, South Carolina to Elsie Marie Drum and Oscar Fred Danner. His life was marked by numerous accomplishments including being a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Bob touched many lives as a businessman, mentor, and friend.
As a cadet at Clemson, he was Captain of Company C Platoon and went on to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and join the United States Air Force. After his training at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, he was transferred to Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach, Florida to assist in the development of the space program.
While working at Patrick AFB, Bob worked on the development of the Cape Canaveral Missile Test Center. Upon leaving the Air Force, He continued to work with Douglas Aircraft on the Snark program.
The day before he left Douglas to go to work with Convair, General Dynamics, he met his future wife, Sylvia Sears. He was sent to San Diego to build rocket test stands for Atlas Missile Engines. One year later when Bob returned to Cape Canaveral, he and Sylvia met again. He helped develop the Atlas missile engines and was a test conductor for Launchpad (LC) 12. He launched several Atlas missiles from 1958 to 1961.
Bob and Sylvia began to date. They were married in Cocoa in September 1960. There was a hurricane that day but the wedding went on as planned. They have been married for 57 years.
Bob was recruited by RCA in Boston to manage the secret SAINT (Satellite Intercept) program. This was the first attempt at “Star Wars” technology.
After congress cancelled funding for the SAINT program, RCA transferred Bob to Los Angeles to manage the Apollo Saturn check/out computer program.
In 1968, he became Vice President and then President of Elpac, a computer capacitor manufacturer in Orange County.
In 1972, he decided to start his own business and began manufacturing chemicals for sanitizing and disinfection in Phoenix.
In 1976, he moved the business and family to Norman, Oklahoma where he built a new manufacturing facility The company has grown and produces antimicrobial products that are used worldwide in the pharmaceutical, food processing and oilfield service industries.
Bob was an avid golfer and loved traveling for his business. He poured his heart and soul into his company and retirement couldn’t keep him away. The people of Bio-Cide breathed life into him and he found great fulfillment in building his company family. Bob was an active member of the Norman community including many years in the Rotary Club and as former Chairman on the Norman Economic Development Coalition. He found great joy in helping people grow and succeed and touched countless lives during his time.
Preceded in death were his parents, sisters Regina Croswell and June Elizabeth Danner, and brother Oscar Fred Danner who was killed in the Korean War.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years; loving sons, Robert and Jeffrey; sister Jan; grandchildren: Sarah, Katie, Caroline, Chris and Sophie and great grandson, Jaxson.
Funeral Services and Celebration of life will be held 1:00p.m., Saturday, February 10th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - 1506 Imhoff Rd, Norman, OK 73072.
