Dorothea June Petty

August 14, 1929 ~ December 19, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old
Dorothea June Petty, 88, was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma on August 14, 1929 to Aubrey and Martha Mason.  June passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. In 1947, June’s father moved the family and their lumber business to Norman, Oklahoma so June could attend the University of Oklahoma, where she studied music, art, and worked at the university bookstore.

June met fellow university student, Dalton Petty, at church.  Their first date was at the Sooner Theater in downtown Norman.  After a loving courtship, they were married on June 24, 1949 at her parent’s home in Norman.  Soon after their marriage, Dalton was called by the US Navy to serve in New Orleans.  Their first daughter, Penny was born in New Orleans in 1952.  After moving back to Norman, their second daughter, Judy was born in 1955. Their third daughter, Suzy was born in Norman in 1963.

June worked alongside Dalton in several family-owned businesses in Norman over the years, including Petty Hardware, the Sports Center, and Farmers Insurance. Dalton and June enjoyed serving many roles together at Westside Church of Christ, where they were charter members.  June taught the Westside 2-year old class for 50 years.

June loved nature, and watching beautiful things grow. She always kept roses in her flower bed, and took care of many birds in her back yard. Her favorite times were those spent with her family, all of whom she loved dearly.

June is survived by her three daughters and husbands, Penny and Bill Sledge of Moore, Judy and Gary Roden of Norman, and Suzy and Paul Boyett of Norman; seven granddaughters, Stacia and Julie Sledge, Julia, Rebecca, and Kimberly Roden, and Christina and Elizabeth Boyett; and her sister and brother-in-law, JoAnna and Carl Couch of Texas.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Dalton Petty; her parents, Aubrey and Martha Mason, and her brother, Johnnie Mason.

June’s arrangements are under the care of Havenbrook Funeral Home. A memorial gathering for all friends and family will be on Wednesday, December 20th, from 5-8 p.m. at Havenbrook Funeral Home.  A private, family graveside service will be held at a later time.
