Darrell Fred Chilson, 83, of Norman passed away Sunday April 29, 2018. He was born June 4, 1934 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Horace Fred and Grace Chilson.
After leaving small-town Iowa for a year at the University of Texas, Darrell embarked on a life-long journey around the world as a member of the United States Air Force. This 30-year adventure led him to the love of his life, his wife Alta, and his two sons Andrew and Nick.
He served his country with honor during times of war and peace, serving remote tours in Korea, the Philippines, Turkey, and also providing valuable communications support to the Presidential fleet Air Force One.
After retiring from the military, Darrell set aside his dream to return to farming, and instead pursued a career helping people as an intensive care unit nurse while raising his family in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma.
When health problems forced him into a second retirement, Darrell moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where he enjoyed the last 13 years of his life watching his grandchildren grow up, spending time with his wife and friends, and walking his dog.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Grace; and his sister, Charlene Shumate.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alta Mercer Chilson of Norman; his sister, Shirley Hartman of Macedonia, Iowa; his sons, Andrew Chilson and wife Linda of Norman, and Nicholas Chilson and wife Laura of Woodward, OK; his grandchildren, Dru, Ian, Ari, and Asa all of Norman, OK, and Nicole, Gracie, and Kelli of Woodward, OK; and his dog, Mya.
Inurnment will be 10:00am Friday morning May 4th, 2018 At Ft. Gibson National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, OK with a memorial service beginning at 2:00PM at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Norman, OK.
