Obituary for David White
David W White passed on Saturday, July 7th at his home in Norman, Oklahoma. Dave was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma on January 24, 1928 to Leslie and Lucille White. In Dave’s early years his family lived in Holdenville, Oklahoma, and Weslaco, Texas, and then moved to El Reno, Oklahoma, where Dave graduated from El Reno High School in 1946.
Upon graduation, he joined the US Army and served 2 years in the occupation of Japan at the 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division at Otsu, Japan. He was discharged as a Sergeant in 1948, and returned to El Reno to work as an electrician for the Rock Island Railroad.
In 1956 he moved to Norman to attend the University of Oklahoma as an engineering student, and concurrently began working for the OU Department of Short Courses as an extension specialist.
It was while working a conference for the department of Short Courses in the summer of 1959 that he met Emily Thompson, who was attending an OU conference as a teacher/sponsor for a group of high school students. They fell in love immediately and were married in November of 1959.
David graduated OU with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1961. He and Emily moved to Erie, PA to begin a position with General Electric in their locomotive division as a service engineer for the new U25B locomotive. After a year in this position, Dave was offered the opportunity to return to Norman and work for OU as the director of Short Courses. Dave retired from OU on December 31, 1987 after 31 years of service to the University.
David and Emily enjoyed many happy years of retirement spending time with family in their Norman home. Dave is survived by Emily, his daughters, his sons-in law and his grandchildren. He was very proud of his family, and they adored him. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephens Methodist Church in Norman (date to be determined). In lieu of flowers, donations to St Stephens Methodist Church of Norman, OK or Good Shepherd Hospice of Norman, OK would be welcomed.
