Jack Dempsey Pointer, Jr., of Norman passed away Monday, March 27, 2017. He was born February 14, 1945 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Jack Dempsey Pointer and Elwanda (Reiger) Pointer.

He grew up in Skiatook, Oklahoma having graduated from Skiatook High School in 1963. He attended Oklahoma Military Academy on football scholarship and then completed his undergraduate degree at Central State College (now University of Central Oklahoma) in Edmond also on a football scholarship receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. In 1970 he received juris Doctorate degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.
He was married to the love of his life Linda Miller on May 28, 1966 and they made their home in Norman where they raised their 3 children, Brandon, Jennifer and Jeffrey.
Jack was a very proud and loving father. He never missed a chance to tell his children how proud he was of them and was very involved in their lives. He also was very proud of his grandchildren and loved them dearly. He was very active in his children’s athletic teams as they were growing up. He coached many kids throughout the years and will always be remembered for being able to balance the role of a tough coach with a fun coach, and that leadership impacted each of the kids he coached.
Jack worked in the public sector in various capacities for two years after admission to the bar, after which he had a successful 45-year private practice. He was also in involved in Oklahoma’s petroleum industry for many years beginning in the 1970’s.
He served as a director of the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association since 1991. Throughout his tenure as a director he has achieved several distinguished awards including the Clarence Darrow Award and the Lord Erskine Award. He also proudly serves as a member of the Federal Criminal Justice Panel.
Jack never turned down the opportunity to help a fellow lawyer in need, and enjoyed mentoring young/new attorneys. He will be remembered for his commitment to the defense of the accused and doing so with the utmost integrity. Throughout his legal career he garnered the respect of not only his clients, but also members of both sides of the bar, and the judges that he appeared in front of regularly.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Pointer is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda; his sons Brandon and wife Julie of Edmond, and Jeffrey and wife Hisato of Japan; his daughter Jennifer Austin and husband Jeffrey of Norman; granddaughter Sydney and grandsons Noah, Samuel Dempsey and Jack; cousins Jerry Malzahn and wife Lyla of Texas and Gus Malzhan and wife Kristi of Alabama.

Funeral Services will begin at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2017 at Victory Family Church, 4343 N. Flood Avenue in Norman.

Memorials may be made in memory of Jack Dempsey Pointer, Jr. to Autism Oklahoma, Second Chance Animal Sanctuary or your charity of choice.
