John D. Hastie, 77, of Goldsby passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017. John was born December 9, 1939 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to John T. Hastie and Foye Threet Hastie. John grew up and attended school in Sand Springs, Oklahoma and was a proud Eagle Scout. In high school, John was the National Speech and Debate Association National Champion in Original Oratory in 1957. John received a Bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Oklahoma in 1961 and went on to get his LL.B. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1964. While in law school, John was a member of Phi Delta Phi Law Fraternity, was the Editor, Oklahoma Law Review and received the Hawes Award as outstanding law graduate, 1964.

John was a Captain in the US Army from 1964-1966. John enjoyed working around the yard and single handedly advanced the wild turkey population of Goldsby, Oklahoma. His love of Norman and the University kept him close and he gave back to the community whenever and wherever he could.

Lecturer: For more than 150 continuing legal education seminars sponsored by the Joint Committee on Continuing Education of the Oklahoma Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute, ALI-ABA, Practicing Law Institute, American Bankers Association, University of Texas, Arkansas Bar Association, Mississippi Bar Association, Texas Bankers Association, Illinois Bar Association, University of British Columbia, Massachusetts Bar Association, Louisiana State University, Associated General Contractors of America, National Association of Homebuilders, Southern Methodist University, Southwestern Legal Foundation, American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, Boiling Springs Legal Institute, Association of Consulting Foresters, Inc., Real Property Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, University of Oklahoma, Anglo-American Real Property Institute, American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.

Author: John was the author of multiple articles in the American Bar Association, the Oklahoma Law Review and other legal publications. He taught and provided materials for national seminars presented by the American Law Institute-American Bar Association including Modern Real Estate Transactions, Real Estate Defaults, Workouts and Reorganization and Real Estate Financing Documentation; was advisor on the Restatement of the Law of Property (Servitudes); and served as an editor for the Practical Real Estate Lawyer, and the Real Estate Law and Practice Course Handbook.

Member: American Bar Association, Oklahoma Bar Association, Cleveland County Bar Association, Association of the Bar of the City of New York, AV Preeminent Rating by Martindale-Hubbell, American College of Real Estate Lawyers (Governor 1990-2000; Executive Committee 1992-2000; President 1999; Fredrick S. Lane Award - 2002), American College of Mortgage Attorneys, Anglo-American Real Property Institute and American Law Institute.

Honors: Chambers USA since 1989; listed in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World; listed in The Best Lawyers in America from the inception of the publication; named the best real estate lawyer in Oklahoma by The Best Lawyers in America since 2009; continuously listed in The Super Lawyers of Oklahoma from the inception of its publication.

John is survived by his wife, Nita G. Hastie; and children, J. Douglas Hastie, Jr. (Anne), Cindy H. Murray, Elizabeth A. Hastie, Mikki White (Robert) and Cindy Mullennix (David); and his grandchildren, Zach, Alex, Hannah, Olivia, Blake, Adam, Alexa, Dale, Drew and Allie. John is also survived by his brother, Gerald D. Hastie.

A Memorial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 22, 2017, at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Boulevard, Norman, Oklahoma 73069.
