Joseph C. Long

Joseph C. Long, 78, of Norman passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017. He was born September 26, 1939 in Aurora, Missouri to Howard Rusk (HR) Long and Margaret Helen (Carney) Long.

He attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana before attending Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA and graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelors of Arts in 1961. He later earned a Juris Doctor (JD) also from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1963 and a Magister Legum (LLM) from the University of Virginia in 1972.

Long began his legal education career in 1966 as an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota. He was appointed graduate fellow at the University of Virginia in 1968 and was named an assistant professor at Stetson University in 1969, finally joining the University of Oklahoma Law Faculty in 1970.

Joe taught at The University of Oklahoma for 31 years, retiring on July 1, 2001. Professor Long retired from OU, concluding a career of distinguished service. He taught courses on agency and partnerships, corporations, and state and federal securities regulation.

During his tenure at OU, Joseph also was special counsel for the North American Securities Administration Association, Inc. He is the author of Blue Sky, a treatise, published in two volumes in 1985 by Clark Boardman Co., and numerous teaching materials and law review articles.

Long was admitted to the Missouri Bar and Illinois Bar in 1963 as well as the Oklahoma Bar in 1975. Additionally, he is a former associate general counsel and consultant for the Oklahoma Securities Commission and former co-reporter for the Revised Uniform Securities Act, National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws.

Other professional affiliations include the Order of the Coif, the Oklahoma Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Joseph served in the Judge Advocate Core of the Army.   

Joseph was married to Margaret (Meg) Louise Manser on February 22, 1964. Joe and Meg raised 2 boys, Frederick (Rick) Howard Long and James (Jim) Edward Long. Margaret passed away on January 8, 2004.

Joseph married Barbara Ruth Elliot in August of 2006.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Meg. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Cora Bearss of Rochester, Indiana; his sons, Rick and Jim; and his 2nd wife Barbara; and his 4 grandchildren: Nicole Elizabeth Long, Alexis Kathryn Long, Meagan Alexandra Long, and Thomas Ian Long.

Memorial service will begin at 10 am, Monday, December 4, 2017 at the First Christian Church of Moore officiated by Rev. Joseph Wingfield and Rev. Jerry Black, 629 NW 12th Street in Moore with internment following at the IOOF Cemetery in Norman. The family will be present to receive friends following the internment at the First Christian Church of Moore, where a memorial lunch will be served. There will also be a celebration of Joe’s life at The Hall at the Railhouse (102 West Eufaula, Suite 205, Norman) on Sunday, December 3rd from 4-6 pm.
