Marilynn Alice Newman

June 19, 1923 ~ November 23, 2019 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Tribute

Another member of “the Greatest Generation” has left our midst.  Marilynn Alice Newman, 96 a much loved wife, mother, grandmother and friend peacefully passed away on Saturday November 23, 2019 with her daughters by her side.  Marilynn was born June 19, 1923 in Lawton, OK to Charles Thomas and Erma Hubbard Smith.  She attended OU and was a proud member of the Tri Delta Sorority having recently received her Golden Circle Pin for 75 years of membership.

She married the love of her life Raymond Stanley Newman on November 13, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri.  They moved to Edmond, OK and opened Smith-Newman Dodge Plymouth Agency.  Later they moved to Norman, OK because it is a good town to raise children, and opened Smith-Newman Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealership.  After Ray sold the dealership, he and Marilyn opened the “Curiosity House” to perpetuate their love of antiques and primitives.  They recognized the dilemma of families left with homes where the contents needed to be disposed and they began the first estate liquidation service in Norman.

Marilynn was active as a Tri Delta Alum, hospital volunteer at Norman Regional Hospital, member of Legacy antiques, an Edgemere Garden Club member, a member of the Sorosis Daughters and a member of Altrusa.

She and Ray loved their second home in Crested Butte, Colorado and many pleasant memories were made there by friends and family.  She loved Christmas season. She and Ray always opened their home to all who wanted food and friendship.  After Rays passing, she began to travel with her family and church groups.  She loved going, even for just a ride.

Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, stepmother Doris, Husband Raymond, and infant daughter Sandra Ellen.

Her survivors are her daughters; Carolynn Newman, Jacquelynn Stephens (James),and  Susan Ferguson (Stanley), Her beloved grandson; Raymond Dale Stephens, and numerous cousins.

A visitation will be 12-8 Tuesday December 3rd also at Havenbrook. A reception with light desserts will be held 12:30-2pm Wednesday December 4th at Havenbrook Funeral Home.
