Mary Agnes Guzman, 87, of Moore, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2023. She was born March 21, 1936, near Elgin, Oklahoma to James Cunningham and Vera (Jones) Cunningham.
Mary attended school in Elgin, Oklahoma until she joined the convent for the Catholic church at age 15. She completed her high school graduation at Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita, Kansas. During high school, she began taking college courses from Sacred Heart College and continued until she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1963. Mary received a Master of Arts Degree with a Major in History from St. Louis University in 1970. Mary taught school in Kansas, Missouri, and Texas for many years. She eventually left the convent after many years. Mary married Jim Grisham until his death. Later, she married Amado Guzman. Mary began working for the Texas Department of Human Services in 1976 until retirement in 1996. She earned many awards during that time, including Outstanding Employee in 1985. This reflects a love and dedication for her work in social services.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim Grisham; husband, Amado Guzman; Amado’s son, Adam Guzman; brothers David, Dennis, James (Buddy) Cunningham, Gregory Cunningham, and John (Mickey) Cunningham. Mary is survived by her sisters Wilma Annette Rhodes, Patricia Shafer, Jeanie Nix, Millie Steadman, and brother Tim Cunningham, along with numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Family and friends will greatly miss Mary’s gentle spirit and quiet presence. She loved her fur family: Rosie and Rusty. She enjoyed reading, caring for her plants, and making her backyard a peaceful and relaxing place to be.
At her request, no services will be held. Interment is at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Norman.
