Mattie Mae Irons

August 22, 1937-May 12, 2020

Mattie Mae Irons was born on August 22, 1937, and went on to be with Our Lord and Savior on May 12, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband J. C. Irons. She is survived by her brother Miller M. Newman and his wife, Alice F. Newman, both of McAlester, Oklahoma. Mattie is also survived by her daughters, Sotora Guy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Brenda Laws of San Jose, California, Lillie Wilburn of Atlanta, Georgia, Angela Mrema and her husband Mark Mrema, of Ft. Worth, Texas, Angelica Franklin and her husband Darius Franklin of San Diego, California and her sons James Laws and his wife Carolyn Laws, of Norman, Oklahoma, Maurice Laws and his wife Von Laws, of Dallas, Texas, Johnny Irons and his wife Lily Irons, of Norman, Oklahoma, Steven Irons, and his fiancée Robin Dean of Norman, Oklahoma, Bradley Irons and his wife Dawn Irons, of Denver City, Texas, Daryl Irons and his wife Danyl Irons, of Norman, Oklahoma and Broderick Willis of Norman, Oklahoma.

She is also survived by 39 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

She attended L’Ouverture High School in McAlester and when she wasn’t occupied as a loving mother, she worked as a dry-cleaning presser by trade. She loved to sing, worship, and write poetry, but mostly she loved God with all that she was and showed that love by visiting the sick, praying for those who had lost loved ones, and taking phone calls at all hours of the night. She expressed love with all that God gave her—hugs, prayer, and more love.

“Mattie Mae” served the Lord and all who knew her for more than 54 years as a choir member, vocalist, minister, and later as an evangelist. She sang, danced, and ministered in her worship in such cities as McAlester, Oklahoma, Dallas, Texas, Terrell, Texas, Temple, Texas, Anadarko, Oklahoma, Lawton, Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, and many points in between.

Her overwhelming love will be missed, and we are all better because of her.
