Norma Louise (Jones) Cummings was born March 17, 1933, to Norman and Reba (Rutherford) Jones in Carthage, Missouri. She had a joyful childhood in Missouri with her parents and brother, Richard. Norma graduated from Springfield High School in 1950 and Southwest Missouri State University in 1953.
She moved to Oklahoma following college graduation and began her teaching career. Norma was a lifelong mathematics teacher and touched the lives of many students throughout the years. She met and fell in love with Alva Andrew (Al) Cummings while they were both teaching classes that were broadcasted on television. They were married on April 2, 1960, at McFarlin United Methodist Church in Norman, Oklahoma.
They raised two daughters, Cheryl Warren and Janet Mitchell. During their childhood she took a break from teaching to stay at home with her girls. Before returning to teaching, Norma served a term as the Director for the Camp Fire Association of Norman. She finished her teaching career in the Lexington Public School system.
She and Al enjoyed researching their genealogy and keeping in touch with their vast and diverse extended family. Norma also enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, crochet, playing cards and reading. She handmade many dresses and special outfits for her daughters throughout their childhood.
Norma was a proud mother-in-law to Michael Hammett and Bryan Mitchell. She was even more proud of her two granddaughters and their husbands: Amber & Aaron Pitts of Perkins, Oklahoma, and Erica & Dayne Sommer of Norman, Oklahoma.
She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband Al, parents, and brother. With her passing on August 5th, 2021, Norma and Al were forever reunited. Her family will celebrate her life with a private graveside service.
