Tribute

PAULA L. “RED” BISSELL
Eureka SD is a small farming town nestled just about in the middle of nowhere. However, on December 22nd, 1949, their population of less than 500 people, grew by one more with the birth of Paula Haux. “Red”, as we called her, was a head turner, you just weren’t sure whether it was going to be because of her beauty or blunder. Always the counselor, mom made sure she was at the center of everyone’s drama. Red wasn’t just made up of flit though, no, she had a lot of fight in her as well: Her first husband, Vance, died in a car accident leaving her with a four and two-year-old to raise by herself. To provide a future for her children, Red managed to get a bachelor’s degree in record time (taking up to 30 credit hours a semester) all while working a job and corralling two crazy kids. In 2003 she put her gloves on again. With prayers, fortitude and rounds and rounds of treatment, she not only fought, but beat stage 4 breast cancer. As hard as that battle was, it was nothing compared to tending and watching her husband of 22 years, David Bissell, lose his fight to lung cancer in 2012. Just six years afterwards, that same challenger that took David, called her out to a last and final match as well. Mom had been victorious over breast cancer, but lung cancer proved to be a much more formidable opponent and at 9:41pm on October 15th of 2018, Red lost her fight. Despite the defeat, she remains a champion in the eyes and hearts of those closest to her. We miss you mom.
Her memories will continue on with son Joe Svoboda; daughter Jamie Wade, daughter-in-law Yiyi, son-in-law Brett; grandsons, Eli, Evan, and CJ; and brother, Bob Haux, sister-in-law, Carolyn.
Paula and David were passionate about helping kids. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, please honor them by donating to South Central Court Appointed Special Advocates at https://www.southcentralcasa.org/donate
