I worked for this awesome man back in 1990ish at OU. I loved his sense of humor and his amazing style! Such a loss. Hugs to his family and friends.

My uncle Steve was a wonderful person. He is the last of that generation of our family. We will miss him very much. I have many fond memories of holidays spent in Norman with my cousins. I also have fond memories of visits to my grandparents with the whole Sutherland Clan in Florida. Being with him over these past few years was a comfort to me. I loved reconnecting with my cousins and their families and getting to know Judy better.

My uncle made a huge effort to help my mom when she divorced my Dad, Steve's older brother. I will forever be grateful for all that he did for our family.

As a niece, I am so proud of all of his achievements. He has made a tremendous difference in so many lives. Judy and all of the extended family should know by reading all of these wonderful messages just how much he was loved and will be missed.

With all my love, Kim

51 years ago as a graduate student in Geography at OU I was lucky to witness the whirlwind that was Dr. Sutherland. I doubt that he knew me then or would remember me now, but it doesn't matter as he still impacted my teaching as I tried to explain climates of the world to my own classes. I can only imagine the fun his classes would be today as the climate change discussions would occur. Years later he would impact my family again as my oldest son benefited as a national merit scholar at OU.

The very best instructor I had---as an undergrad or grad student. I have never forgotten him or his lively class. Grateful, still.

Dr. Stephen Sutherland was sui generis--in a class by himself. As one of his University Scholars in the 70s, I was in awe of his wit, his running, his intellect, Judy, and his remarkable world view. He got me into running ("Merton's Milers"), and introduced me to Duane Roller who changed my life just as Steve did.
HIs Honors Geography class ("every scholar deserves one easy A in college) was a hoot, and a learning experience at the same time. (It included both tombstone topography and Italian food at Krebs.)
He told us the profs to take, and never refused to help even when enrollment was convinced that I had withdrawn from the University.
I had really hoped for some more conversations, but that is not to be. Yet, he will live on in my heart and mind as long as I do. Countless others revere him as well. The University Lives On in a much better and brighter way because of Stephen M. Sutherland.

We know we lost a great wit and wealth of information when Steve died, but his memory and stories of their travels and food will live on for us for many years to come. We will miss our many deck intrusions at the lake.

I was one of Dr. Sutherland's University Scholars as a freshman at OU in 1973. He and my dad, Dr. Joe Garrison, were colleagues and close friends at OU. Dr. Sutherland was also a supporter of the OU track team of which I was a member. I always appreciated his encouragement, his wisdom and his great sense of humor. I am blessed to have known him and considered him a mentor, a role model, and a friend. I am especially pleased that my daughter was also a University Scholar at OU and is now an academic counselor in the very same program started by Dr. Sutherland. My condolences to Mrs. Sutherland and the rest of the family.,

Steve and I were friends and colleagues from the first time we met during what seems like a lifetime ago. We were soul mates on a journey to to best the best teachers and mentors that we could to students at the University of Oklahoma. And above all else, we held in common our unconditional love for our wives and children and other family members. During hard times Steve cried together. During good times we laughed together. During all times, we held fast to our ideals pertaining to creating one nation with liberty and justice for all people. No magic can set free my memories of the many selfless things Steve did for me and countless other people. He was one of my heroes!

Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are offered to the family, friends, colleagues and students of Dr. Sutherland. During his outstanding career with the University of Oklahoma, he made exceptional contributions on behalf of the University community. Oscar thoroughly enjoyed time spent with him over 52 years, from a freshman student in his geography class in Fall 1965, to visiting with him before he participated in Water Aerobics at the Cleveland County Y in recent years. He was one of a kind!
