I remember Dr. Barnes very well from my study of German at OU. He was a kind and patient professor with so many interesting stories to tell. To me, he was the very epitome of a university professor. I also appreciate his continued contributions to OU which I learned about from his tribute here. I am very saddened to hear about his passing and my thoughts are with his family.

Dr. Mervin Barnes was a lovely man and a gentleman. I came to OU in 1994 and had a chance to meet him then. May he rest in peace and may his family find solace.

I'm writing on behalf of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. Many of our faculty came to Modern Languages before he retired, and his influence is still felt in the department. We are saddened to hear of his passing, and we wish to extend our condolences to Dr. Barnes' family members and friends. He will be missed, but not forgotten, here in Modern Languages.
